The State Library of Victoria in collaboration with the Public Libraries Victoria Network today created Victoria’s biggest book club with the launch of the fourth annual Summer Read, a program which celebrates the diversity of Victorian writing and encourages Victorians to enjoy and discuss books over summer.
Summer Read coordinator at the State Library, Susan McLaine, says the program is all about exposing people to great Victorian stories and sharing the experience of reading.
‘From Alex Miller’s Lovesong to Barry Dickins’ Unparalleled Sorrow, these are wonderfully crafted stories with broad appeal. The Summer Read provides an opportunity to read these books for free and discuss them in a group which adds to the richness of the reading experience.
Because there will be multiple copies of these books at the libraries, many people will have a chance to read and enjoy them,’ she said.
