Council Boosts Funds for Gravel Road Maintenance

Council has allocated an additional $205,000 for “catch up” gravel road maintenance to address a backlog of work due to an inability to grade the roads amid wet conditions across the municipality. Heavier than usual rainfall in recent months has resulted in about 100 gravel road defects listed for repair in August and another 60 in September.

Council’s existing three maintenance grading crews are working as hard as they can within existing resources to complete overdue defects as a priority; however, they are gradually falling further behind because of the unsuitable conditions.

The additional funding will allow for an extra grading crew to be engaged in the short term to address the backlog of defects across the shire’s 2,050 kilometres gravel road network.

A business case will be prepared seeking additional funding/resources in future budgets for road maintenance works.

Place-Based Plan for Colbinabbin

The remaining allocation of $8,493 from Community Planning Implementation Funds will be released to the Colbinabbin Development Group to develop a Place-Based Plan, incorporating a Township Facility Plan, and a revision of the town’s Recreation Reserve Masterplan.

Council’s Community Development Team will collaborate with the Colbinabbin Development Group which is representative of the diverse community groups within the town. Together, they will develop plans that articulate the Colbinabbin community’s long-term ambitions, make recommendations on the future of key community assets and develop an action plan that supports activation of initiatives already in place in Colbinabbin.

Through its Place-Based Planning approach, Council is partnering with local communities to capitalise on the strengths of towns to create distinctive and sustainable public places.

Council Acknowledges Audit and Risk Committee’s 2020/21 Achievements

Council has acknowledged the work, and thanked the independent members of, the Audit and Risk Committee for their contributions in supporting Council to oversee the corporate governance, financial performance and risk management of the organisation for the 12 months to 30 June.

Each member of the committee brings a wealth of knowledge and skills, and contributes many hours to their volunteer position. Their role includes reviewing the outcomes of internal audits, monitoring the implementation of internal audit recommendations that address identified risks and reviewing quarterly financial reports.

During 2020/21, the committee reviewed the Annual Financial Statements and Performance Statement for the 2019/20 year, reviewed various policies, and reviewed the strategic risk register. It also provided oversight to the review and further development of Council’s Risk Management Framework and the identification of strategic risks for the organisation.

Council is currently conducting an expression of interest process to fill two vacant positions on the Audit and Risk Committee. For more information, visit www.campaspe.vic.gov.au/nowopen or phone Council on 5481 2200.

An allocation of $1,000 and in-kind support to the value of a further $1,000 has been approved to assist the Goulburn Valley Equestrian Club Inc. with costs associated with hosting the Horse Riding Club Association Victoria’s Top Team Trophy Show to be held on 12 December 2021 at the Elmore Events Centre.

The support is provided through Council’s Community Event Sponsorship Program which offers financial support to community organisations, groups and associations to conduct events that contribute to the vibrancy and economy of the shire and support the Community Vision.
