Campaspe Shire Council is partnering with Kyabram Police to support business owners in a review of business security.

General Manager Community, Mr Keith Oberin said the focus of the partnership is to assist Kyabram business owners in completing a self-assessment and providing tips and prevention measures that can be taken to improve security.

“The program was developed in response to a petition to Council by Echuca businesses in 2018 seeking improvements to business security,” Mr Oberin said.

“We then partnered with Victoria Police to support the distribution of their Business Security Kit, including self-assessment tool.”

“The program was well received in Echuca and highlighted the opportunity to expand into other townships.”

The program will see a Crime Prevention Officer from Victoria Police visiting businesses in Kyabram CBD to discuss basic crime prevention measures.

“The review will take business owners through a self-assessment to uncover areas of potential vulnerability and learn what actions can be taken to reduce the risk of crime,” Senior Sergeant Peter Wardell said.

“The Business Security Kit, developed by Victoria Police, will be used to provide business owners with helpful steps that business owners can take themselves to increase business safety.”

The kit covers a range of topics including:

  • aggressive people and how to deal with the situation
  • cash handling, the cash register itself, how to store and transport cash
  • credit card fraud and electronic crime
  • closed circuit television, where and how to use
  • graffiti, some strategies how to minimise opportunities
  • theft, from employees as well as from the shop.

“The kit also provides an incident report form and description form to help business owners capture an incident which can be used to help solve a crime,” Senior Sergeant Wardell said.

“All business owners in Kyabram are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and learn what steps can be taken,” Mr Oberin said.

Businesses in Kyabram CBD will be visited on Tuesday, 1 June from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. In addition, all Kyabram business owners can book a free appointment on a date and time that suits them by contacting Council’s customer service team on 1300 666 535.
