To assist residents with preparations for the upcoming fire season, Campaspe Shire Council is accepting garden organics free of charge at all Resource Recovery Centres between Tuesday, 13 October and Tuesday, 3 November.

Chief Executive Officer, Declan Moore said each year during spring, the three week program is offered to encourage the community to get out in their yards and tidy up ahead of the fire season.

“There is normally a charge for residential green waste so now is the ideal time to get out and spring clean the gardens,” Mr Moore said.

Clearing long grass, fallen leaves and twigs from around the home will reduce potential fire fuels.

Other things you can do to remove hazards in preparation for the fire season include:

  • Removing dead undergrowth and fallen branches
  • Keeping grass cut to a low level
  • Cleaning leaves out of gutters

Green waste will be accepted free of charge at the Echuca Environment Centre and Resource Recovery Centres at Mt Scobie (Kyabram), Rochester, Colbinabbin, Gunbower, Lockington, Rushworth and Toolleen.

Green waste must be separated from other waste, as any contamination will mean it will attract a charge. Commercial loads, generally defined as larger than a tandem trailer-load, will not be accepted.

“Preparing your property by clearing up and removing potential fire hazards is a significant action we can all take to reduce fuels and keep our community safe,” Mr Moore said.

Residents visiting the Echuca and Mt Scobie Resource Recovery Centres can also pick up mulch for no charge. Mulch is free to collect from these sites during operating hours year round. Please ask the site attendant when you arrive to assist in loading the mulch into your trailer or ute.
