About Stanhope

Stanhope is a small agriculture-based town with a district population of just over 900. It has an attractive town centre with barbecue and quality recreation facilities.

Known for its cheese production, the largest employer in town is the cheese factory, closely followed by other parts of the dairy industry. You can pick up delicious, locally made quality cheeses.

Stanhope’s most famous son John (Black Jack) McEwen is remembered through a memorial bust in his honour. McEwen took up a soldier settlement block in Stanhope prior to becoming a powerful figure in Federal Parliament, leading the Country Party and briefly becoming Prime Minister after the drowning of Harold Holt off Portsea in 1967.

In 2015, Stanhope became the first LEGENDAIRY capital of Australia, recognising the contribution the dairy industry has made to the district.
