Call into one of the cellar doors in the area, stop for a coffee, cool drink or meal at one of the town’s eateries. Make sure you check out the views from Chinamen’s Bend at the top of the Colbinabbin Range, featuring Mount Alexander and the hills around Bendigo.
Toolleen is an important agricultural area and part of the Heathcote wine growing region with cellar doors and bistros aplenty.
The town was born of the gold rush. Its location at the crossroads between Melbourne, Echuca and Bendigo to the north west made it a popular stop for gold prospectors and a place for them to purchase timber. The town is still a popular stop on the highway.
More than 350 people live in Toolleen, which has a local hotel, post office and general store, sports facilities and two churches.
