On Friday, 4 October, the highly anticipated Glow Up Youth Disco lit up Fuzion Café in Echuca, drawing 86 young people from across the region for an unforgettable night of music, dancing, and community celebration. Co-designed by local youth and aimed at providing an inclusive, safe space for LGBTQIA+ young people and their allies, the event was a resounding success.
Attendees, ranging from ages 12 to 17, were treated to an exciting lineup of activities, including a live DJ, interactive Just Dance sessions, and a vibrant photo booth to capture memories of the night. The chill-out space, provided by the KiT Van, offered a supportive and inclusive environment for those needing a break from the dance floor, while free food and drinks kept everyone energised.
Campaspe Shire Council CEO Pauline Gordon said the event highlighted the importance of fostering safe, inclusive spaces for young people to express themselves and connect with their peers.
“Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive and the event showcased the strength and vibrancy of the local LGBTQIA+ community,” Ms Gordon said.
A highlight of the evening was the incredible effort put forth by the Rainbow Community Angels, who created a welcoming and safe entrance for all. The DJ set the tone for the night with a fantastic selection of music, keeping the dance floor buzzing. The Fuzion Café team delivered top-notch service, with crowd-favourites like fairy floss and popcorn.
“It was wonderful to be able to provide free transportation to and from the event for young people from Kyabram, Rochester, and Tongala, ensuring access for all youth in our region,” said Ms Gordon added.
The Glow Up Youth Disco was organised through collaboration of local services, including Council’s Youth Community Development Team, Echuca Regional Health, headspace Echuca, and Thorne Harbour Health, as well as funding from the Victorian Government's Pride Events and Festivals Fund and FReeZA Program.
