Works within a road reserve

You will need a permit to do work on a Council managed road reserve.

A road reserve is the public land from outside the property boundary and generally consists of a nature strip (or roadside), drains, verge, road shoulder and roadway.

Permits for driveways, landscaping or other minor works in urban areas

For minor works in the road reserve, such as construction of a driveway in an urban area, occupation of a road reserve or nature strip beautification etc, you need to complete a Works Within Road Reserve - Vehicle crossing / nature strip landscaping application form.

How to apply

  • Submit application, by mail, in person or via email

Once received, Council will assess your application and advise the applicable fee to be paid prior to a permit being issued.

For construction of driveway in an urban area, please note the works permit is in addition to a building permit, if required, and ensures that the driveway is designed in line with local laws and the Road Management Act.

For works in a nature strip you will need to work within your property boundary. For landscaping works within your nature strip, please make contact with the Road Services team to discuss options available.

Permits for utility or development related works

To install a utility connection, subdivision work construction, or other development projects in the road reserve you need to complete a Works within Road Reserve – Utility development works application form.

Assets in the road reserve

Landowners may also be able to locate assets in the road reserve for a:

  • pipe - stock & domestic
  • pipe - irrigation
  • cattle underpass
  • other
