Celebrating Community Transport Drivers
Published on 20 May 2025
In honour of National Volunteer Week, we are reaching out to the Kyabram community to highlight the vital role of our community transport drivers and encourage new volunteers to join us. Since its inception in 1990, the Community Volunteer Transport program has been enriching the lives of eligible Campaspe residents, ensuring that they can access medical appointments and essential health services where they don’t have another viable option.
Campaspe Shire Mayor, Cr Daniel Mackrell praised the efforts of our community’s volunteers.
"Volunteer community transport drivers are among the unsung heroes of Campaspe. Their dedication and compassion ensure that our most vulnerable residents can access essential services and maintain their independence.
“Currently, we have 15 drivers who have already completed over 100 trips this year, with an annual average of 250-300 trips. Our volunteers provide essential transportation to Bendigo, Shepparton, and Melbourne, ensuring residents can access specialists, surgeries, and vital allied health services outside their hometown.
“Our service is entirely funded by the council, with only a nominal fee for each trip to cover fuel and car expenses. The dedication of our volunteers is the backbone of our community transport service,” said the Mayor.
Trish Williams, a volunteer driver of twelve years, recalls what inspired her to start driving.
“My parents had a similar service where they were living, so I wanted to be able to pay it forward in our own community.
“My favourite part is meeting different people and finding out their life stories… it’s nice to know that you can be there for them when they’re in need”, Mrs Williams added.
Cr Mackrell encourages Kyabram residents to get involved, as service demand exceeds the capacity of the current volunteers in the area.
“Volunteering as a transport driver offers a rewarding experience, allowing you to connect with your community and make a difference in people's lives.
"I urge everyone in Kyabram to consider becoming a volunteer transport driver. Your efforts will make a profound difference in the lives of our residents and help build a more supportive and inclusive community." Cr Mackrell said.
