Community invited to join reconciliation event

Campaspe Shire Council is hosting an all of community event to celebrate Australia’s shared history, culture and achievements as part of National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June).

Mayor Cr Chrissy Weller said this year’s theme is ‘More than a word, Reconciliation takes action’, with a focus on urging the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action.

“The week gives us time to reflect that the reconciliation is a journey for all Australians, as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation,” Cr Weller said.

“We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and futures.”

The event will be held on Thursday, 27 May at 10am at Hopwood Gardens, Echuca with a smoking ceremony, flag raising and speeches.

The week commemorates two historic milestones – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

2021 marks twenty years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process.

The event will be held in line with COVID Safe requirements and residents are asked not to join if they are feeling unwell.
