Bin food garden green

Campaspe Shire Council is encouraging township residents to ‘opt in’ for a food and garden waste (green bin) service and save on their annual waste charges.

General Manager Community, Keith Oberin said residents who have a green bin service already receive the reduced charge for their red lid waste bin.

“With food waste making up around 37 per cent of household waste in Campaspe, residents also have the option to downsize to a smaller red bin and save in annual waste charges,” Mr Oberin said.

How does it work?...

A household with the smallest 80 litre waste bin and no green bin, can order a green bin and only pay an extra $5 on their annual waste charges.

A household with the medium 140 litre waste bin and no green bin, can order a green bin and pay $10 less on their annual waste charges.

Green bins for food and garden waste come in two sizes – large 240 litre and medium 140 litre. The medium size is available to assist those households with little or no garden or space to store the bin.

All food scraps can be added to the green bin, including fruit and vegetable scraps, egg shells, seafood, meat, bones, dairy products, bread, cereal, pasta and rice as well as all leftover food – cooked and raw. The bin also accepts paper towel, tissues, napkins and shredded paper.

It is important to keep all plastic and biodegradable bags out of the green bin. Only Australian standard compostable bags with the AS4736 symbol can be used as they are made with a natural corn starch base and vegetable oils which break down once in a composting environment.
