Policy on trading in public places out for community comment

Council’s Policy 159 Public Spaces Trading is out for community comment, after minor amendments were made to bring it up to date.

The policy provides guidance to Council staff and the community to ensure consistent decision-making and implementation in relation to the timing, locations, activities and equipment for trading goods and services on Council owned and managed land throughout the Shire of Campaspe.

Campaspe Mayor Cr Chrissy Weller said the policy also helps keep public spaces safe for both traders and pedestrians alike.

“Trading on footpaths, in parks and reserves, and other public spaces adds to the vibrancy of communities but needs to be done safely and appropriately,” Cr Weller said.

“The Public Spaces Trading Policy provides a framework to ensure that public areas remain safe and accessible, and gives Council a mechanism to regulate trading activities so they do not negatively impact on local amenity and aesthetics of an area.”

Changes to the policy include an introduction of Potential Trading Area, removal of the limit on the number markets to be held within the Port of Echuca, and updates to administrative items and guidelines.

The amended policy is available for viewing and via Council’s customer service centres. Any comments on the amended policy must be provided to Council by 5pm on Friday, 18 June.

After considering any public feedback and adoption of the policy, Council will seek expressions of interest from eligible groups/organisations to apply for licences to hold a market within the Port of Echuca.
